When the sun goes down and the moon comes up Quand le soleil se couche et la lune se lève
As the third guest of a series of XL exhibitions organized by the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva, Ugo Rondinone was given “carte blanche” to dialog with the museum’s permanent collection in the halls of the main building, from which a unique esthetic experience was born.
Centered around two emblematic figures of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Swiss art—Félix Vallotton and Ferdinand Hodler—When the Sun Goes Down and the Moon Comes Up dwells upon the importance of love and desire in our relationship with art and creation. In his role as curator, Ugo Rondinone has decided to produce a volume to complement the show in the same spirit as his previous endeavors, The Third Mind (2018) and Artists and Poets (2015).
The book is a collection of colour photographs that capture the museum’s halls and the exhibited works (both Rondinone’s and those belonging to the MAH Collection).
Ugo Rondinone was born in Brunnen in 1964 and lives in New York. He is one of the most important figures in the international contemporary art scene. His work at the MAH (Musée d’art et d’histoire) in Geneva is not only in line with the spirit of “cartes blanches” upheld by Marc-Olivier Wahler but is also in continuity with Rondinone’s penchant for vast exhibitions, both as an artist and a curator (such as The Third Mind and I love John Giorno, organized at the Palais de Tokyo in 2007 and 2015).
The exhibition “When the Sun Goes Down and the Moon Comes Up” was held at the Musée d’art et d’histoire, Geneva from 26 January to 18 June 2023
