250 opere del Museum of Modern Art di New York dal 1980 ai giorni nostri
Introduction by Glenn D. Lowry
An invaluable survey of the art of our time, “facing the future, original and challenging rather than conventional and academic.”
MoMA takes its cue from the construction of a new building, enabling it to exhibit its famous collection of international contemporary art in new and more spacious galleries, to publish a book covering all the works in its possession dating from after 1980. To keep it within manageable proportions, the curators of the seven departments – Architecture and Design, Drawings, Film, Media and Performance Art, Painting and Sculpture, Photography, Prints and Illustrated Books have selected 250 works that in their respective fields have left their mark on the past twenty-five years.
The introductory essay by MoMA’s director explains how from its very inception the museum has had to find a balance between its regard for yesterday’s art and its commitment to the art of today and takes us on a journey of discovery through the always stimulating innovations that artists have introduced in their art in the firm belief that challenging equals expressive. Each masterpiece is given its own full-page illustration, accompanied by a brief, but exhaustive, commentary explaining its significance.
