Ogawa Kazumasa (1860–1929) was a pioneer of Japanese photography and leading publisherof photographs during the Meiji era, issuing a large number of illustrated books depictingtraditional Japanese views specifically for the Western market. This book appeared in 1896and an original copy exists in the J. Paul Getty Museum. It contains delicate pictures of indigenousJapanese flowers (especially lotuses, several varieties of chrysanthemums and lilies, andsome volubilis) taken by Ogawa himself and printed using the so-called phototype process,the final prints being hand-coloured. The present edition reproduces the thirty-eight plates ofthe original work.
Ogawa Kazumasa was a pioneer in the field of photography, photographic printing, and publishingin Japan during the Meiji period.
