The final volume in the three part Hugo Bernatzik series explores the Austrian photographer's work undertaken in Southeast Asia and Indonesia, during a time when he was at the height of his powers, both technically, artistically, and from an anthropological perspective.
These are Bernatzik's photographs of the peoples of Southeast Asia (including the island of Bali and Malabar, India). The principle regions covered are Burma, Siam, Cambodia and Annam. As with the other books in this series, a strong case could be made that these portraits of a long-lost times are more 'Art' than 'Ethnography', but however these photos are viewed, there is a profound sense of time and place which cannot help capture the imagination.
