INTERNO POMPEIANO

by Luigi Spina

From 23 April 2024 Castel Sant'Angelo will host the first major exhibition dedicated to Luigi Spina's photographic project, Interno Pompeiano.

The campaign, which allowed the photographer to investigate the interiors of more than one hundred and twenty domus in Pompeii, began during the closure to the public of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, then directed by Prof. Massimo Osanna, due to the pandemic.

The corpus of more than 1450 shots gave rise first of all to the publishing project Interno Pompeiano by 5 Continents Editions, a book of almost 300 large-format colour photographs, with essays by Massimo Osanna, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Carlo Rescigno and Giuseppe Scarpati, as well as by Spina himself.

This is the starting point for the exhibition Interno Pompeiano (until 16 June 2024), organised by the Direzione Musei statali di Roma, in collaboration with the Direzione generale Musei and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

Through 60 large-format colour photographs, printed on fine art paper, the exhibition recounts the unique condition that allowed Spina to "inhabit" Pompeii and "live" in its houses, thus being able to follow the shaping of natural light over the course of the day, and capture the nuances in the multiple environments of his shots.

Date: 23/04/2024 - 16/06/2024
