This book takes the example of collections in the Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region to address the issues of the acquisition and status of African art in museums in the West and the position adopted by the art market in its regard. The authors, who are African and European academics and museum curators, discuss relations with Africa, which have consisted of tension, rejection, and cooperation in varying degrees, the interplay between missionary and anthropological involvement and the role of Madeleine Rousseau in the recognition of African cultures and art.
