Although often tiny, these objects nonetheless evoke the most varied aspects of life: the daily concerns of the Nile peasant having to deal with an environment still haphazardly under control, the multifaceted array of gods and sacred animals, the nuanced features of royalty&#8230;<br \/>\nIt takes its cue from the approach pioneered by Jacques-\u00e9douard Berger, responsive as he was to an object\u2019s \u201cdiscourse,\u201d and the reader is treated to a passionate investigation of the meaning of the concept of \u201cneter,\u201d universal and divine harmony, through objects imbued with \u201cnefer,\u201d profound and all-embracing beauty.<br \/>\nMost of the amulets presented in the book are on display in the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts (mudac) in Lausanne, where the Jacques-\u00e9douard Berger Collection is in long-term deposit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philippe Germond<\/strong> holds a PhD in Egyptology from the University of Geneva and is the chairman of the Egyptology Society of Geneva.
