Painter, engraver, illustrator, writer and art critic, F\u00e9lix Vallotton (1865-1925) is known for the impact of his compositions, a combination of his decorative instincts and graphic wit. His revival of the woodcut in the 1890s quickly established him in the art and literary circles of Paris, and his talent as a prolific illustrator, especially for the press, spread his fame throughout Europe and as far afield as the United States. He illustrated bestsellers such as Poil de Carotte<\/em>, by Jules Renard, and contributed to the most fashionable avant-garde periodicals of the time: including, La Revue Blanche<\/em>, Le Rire<\/em>, Le Cri de Paris<\/em>, L<\/em>\u2019Assiette au Beurre<\/em>, and Le Canard Sauvage<\/em>, in Paris, Jugend<\/em> and Die Insel<\/em>, in Munich and Berlin, The Studio<\/em>, in London, The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine<\/em>, in New York, among others.<\/p>\n

This book assembles a number of critical essays and a selection of around 250 reproductions to explore this little-known aspect of Vallotton\u2019s work. It is being brought out to coincide with the online publication of F<\/em>\u00e9lix Vallotton illustrateur. <\/em>Catalogue raisonn\u00e9<\/em> (volume 32 in the \u201cCatalogues raisonn\u00e9s d’artistes suisses\u201d series, created by Fondation F\u00e9lix Vallotton, Lausanne, and Institut suisse pour l’\u00e9tude de l\u2019art, Lausanne\/Zurich (SIK-ISEA).<\/p>\n

Katia Poletti<\/strong> is the curator of the F\u00e9lix Vallotton Foundation in Lausanne. She is the author of F<\/em>\u00e9lix Vallotton illustrateur. Catalogue raisonn\u00e9<\/em> (online) and co-organiser of the \u201cVallotton Forever\u201d retrospective (Lausanne, 2025). She previously collaborated on the F<\/em>\u00e9lix Vallotton. L’\u0153uvre peint<\/em> (2005) catalogue raisonn\u00e9 and co-organised several retrospectives of the artist\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

Sarah Burkhalter<\/strong> is head of Antenne Romande and is on the board of Institut suisse pour l’\u00e9tude de l\u2019art (SIK-ISEA). She holds a doctorate in art history and, with Katia Poletti, co-directed the SNSF F<\/em>\u00e9lix Vallotton illustrateur. Catalogue raisonn\u00e9<\/em> (online) research project, of which she is one of the authors.<\/p>\n

Julien Schuh<\/strong> is a lecturer in French Literature at the University of Paris Nanterre. He specialises in nineteenth-century literature, the history of the book, the illustrated press, and digital humanities.<\/p>\n

Marina Ducrey<\/strong> is the author of the three-volume catalogue raisonn\u00e9 F<\/em>\u00e9lix Vallotton. <\/em>L’\u0153uvre peint<\/em>, which won the 2005 SNA (Syndicat national des antiquaires) art book prize and earned her the title of Chevalier de l\u2019Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la R\u00e9publique Fran\u00e7aise. She is now an honorary curator and member of the board of the F\u00e9lix Vallotton Foundation in Lausanne.<\/p>\n
