Four Tempos<\/em>, devoted to the plaster casts by Antonio Canova held at the Gypsotheca\u00a0in Possagno, opens with one of the sculptor\u2019s best-known works, the <em>Three Graces<\/em>, in which Zeus\u2019s three daughters\u2014Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thalia\u2014are joined in a delicate embrace.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied by an introductory text by Vittorio Sgarbi, Luigi Spina\u2019s photographic research dwells upon other masterpieces, their bronze nails eliciting an insatiable reflection on the work process of the great neoclassic sculptor. We thus find a full-figure portrait of George Washington depicted as a Roman potentate, the only work Canova ever made for an overseas patron, and a statue of Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte, one of the most important and enterprising of Napoleon\u2019s descendants, posing as the Muse Polyhymnia. Spina\u2019s gaze then turns to the <em>Dancer<\/em> with her hands on her hips, carved for the empress Jos\u00e9phine de Beauharnais; to the <em>Venus Italica<\/em>, which fully displays Canova\u2019s study not only of the <em>Venus de\u2019 Medici<\/em>, but also of masterpieces such as the <em>Capitoline Venus<\/em> and the <em>Venus Callipyge<\/em>; and finally to the <em>Sleeping Nymph<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luigi Spina<\/strong> is a photographer. With 5 Continents Editions he has published <em>The Buchner Boxes\u00a0<\/em>(2014),\u00a0<em>Hemba\u00a0<\/em>(2017), and\u00a0<em>Diario Mitico\u00a0<\/em>(2017). With the same publisher and with the cooperation of Valeria Sampaolo he has also created the series \u201cRare and Precious Objects from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples\u201d and \u201cHidden Treasures,\u201d which includes the following volumes: <em>The<\/em> <em>Farnese Cup<\/em>, <em>Alexander\u2019s Mosaic<\/em>,<em> San Domenico di Niccol\u00f2 dell\u2019Arca<\/em>, and<em> The Riace Bronzes. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vittorio Sgarbi\u00a0<\/strong>is an art critic, the curator of internationally acclaimed exhibitions, a refined collector, and the author of popular volumes on the importance of culture and art. Among his most recent publications is <em>Ecce Caravaggio. Da Roberto Longhi a oggi <\/em>(La Nave di Teseo, 2021).
