A new generation of artists took their cue from this stance in the 1960s, and attempted to reformulate the concept of sculpture through the systematic use of photography, which by that time was recognized as an artistic medium in its own right.

The eight artists in this book maintain a close link between photography and sculpture, to the point that at times the two become inseparable. The work explores the different points at which they come into contact and the nature of their alliance, which may involve separate practices (Cy Twombly), dovetail from the moment of their production (Richard Long), employ the reverberations of a shared imagination (Giuseppe Penone, Dieter Appelt), or exploit the formal echo of one to another (John Chamberlain). Linked by the same paradoxes associated with sight itself (Markus Raetz), an uncertain deductive logic (Mac Adams), or the double experience of an irreversible ephemeral action (Gordon Matta-Clark), sculpture and photography seem for these artists to reveal the two faces of the same problem concerning the creation and perception of art.

Catherine Chevillot is a Conservateur général du patrimoine and director of the Musée Rodin, Paris.
Michel Frizot is emeritus director of research at CNRS; he is a historian and theorist of photography and has taught at the University of Paris IV, at the École du Louvre and at EHESS.
Hélène Pinet is head of research, archive, library and documentary services at the Musée Rodin, Paris.
Gilles A.
