MARIA LAI | Double Event, December 3, 2019 in Milan
The result of a collaboration between 5 Continents Editions and M77 Gallery: two events devoted to Maria Lai will take place in Milan on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.
Our first appointment will be from 10:30 am to noon in the former Aula Magna of the Brera Academy. The art historian Elena Pontiggia will host a discussion with Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, director of MAXXI Arte, Luigia Lonardelli, MAXXI curator, Francesca Alfano Miglietti, art historian, and Maria Sofia Pisu, president of the Maria Lai Foundation.
The central subject of this polyphonic debate will be the standing of the Sardinian artist on the Italian and international art scene, her success with critics, and the opportunities that are materializing thanks to a better acquaintance with Maria Lai and her work, which gained great visibility also thanks to the shows organized in her honor over recent years: for example, her presence at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017), at Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel (2017), as well as the show The Thread and the Infinite at Palazzo Pitti (2018), and finally, the ongoing exhibition in Rome at MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st-century Arts, Maria Lai. Holding the Sun by the Hand (June 19, 2019 – January 12, 2020).
The second appointment will be a talk hosted at 7 pm by M77 Gallery during which a recently purchased work by Maria Lai that has never been publicly viewed will be presented. Elena Pontiggia, Maria Sofia Pisu, Giorgio Dettori, a friend of the artist and her trustworthy photographer, and Walter Baldi, collector, will attend the event.
